Education in Remote and Island Communities

Overview

Small, remote and island schools face a recognisable set of pressures: thin staffing, mixed-age classes, distance from specialist services, and populations that are ageing or shrinking. Some of this is structural and will not change. A good deal of it is a question of method — and that is what this course works on.

Across five days you look at school-community cooperation, small-group and mixed-level teaching, digital collaboration with classrooms elsewhere, and what inclusion looks like when specialist support is limited. Chios serves as the working case study throughout, not as a model to copy but as one instance of a pattern many participants will recognise from their own region.

You leave with a continuity and resilience plan adapted to your own school or programme, built during the course rather than handed to you at the end.

Teachers, school leaders and education coordinators working in small, rural, remote or island settings, and anyone designing programmes for communities with thin institutional infrastructure. It assumes you already know your own context well; the course gives you a structured way to compare it with another one.

Day-by-day programme

1. Day 1 — The shared condition of remote and island education

   Welcome, needs mapping and a structured comparison exercise: what geographic remoteness, small population and island status actually change in day-to-day school life — staffing, curriculum choice, transport, family involvement. Introduction to Chios as the course case study, and a first pass at matching its patterns against participants’ own regions.

2. Day 2 — School-community cooperation and place-based learning

   School-community cooperation as a working method rather than a slogan: finding willing local partners, defining a joint activity, and agreeing what each side contributes. Turning a local site, tradition, business or landscape feature into a structured, repeatable learning unit. Participants draft one cooperation proposal for their own institution.

3. Day 3 — Teaching small and mixed groups, connecting across distance

   Practical methods for small-group and mixed-level classes: differentiated tasks, peer tutoring and combined-year planning. Setting up reliable digital collaboration with partner classrooms across distance, without depending on any single platform. Participants build and peer-test a small-group lesson plan and a cross-distance activity outline.

4. Day 4 — Inclusion where specialist services are limited

   What a small school can realistically do in-house where specialist support — special educational needs, therapy, counselling, careers guidance — is thin or absent. Demographic change and intergenerational participation: designing activities that bring older residents, families and pupils into the same learning space. Case discussion against participants’ own service gaps.

5. Day 5 — Continuity, resilience and taking it home

   Continuity planning: keeping a small school’s programme stable through staff turnover, seasonal population change or service withdrawal. Using local heritage, environment and economy as durable learning resources that do not depend on external funding. Personal transfer plan adapting one Chios practice to your own community, peer review, evaluation and certificates.

Methodology

Grounded in the Chios case study throughout, but built for comparison: after every local example, participants map the same question onto their own region and note what would need to change. Small-group design challenges, structured peer exchange and a daily reflection log replace lecture blocks. By the final day you are working on a transfer plan for your own school, not a generic takeaway.

Course fee: €400 per participant

Fully covered by Erasmus+ KA1 — the programme's unit cost is €80 per participant per day, so a five-day course is funded in full.

The fee includes:

• 25 hours of training in the classroom (60 min) ≈ 30 teaching hours (45 min)
• All training materials and a course pack
• Coffee breaks throughout the course
• A welcome dinner with the group
• A half-day cultural programme in the Mastic Villages, with a guide and transport
• Full administrative support: Learning Agreement, Europass Mobility document, Certificate of Attendance, invoice
• A Polymathia representative on site every day
